Welcome everyone, to the story of two happy, well-behaved little boys who enjoyed non-stop partying this holiday weekend.
The boys were just wonderful as we spent a lot of time with our adult friends, enjoying BBQs and time with out of towners. They are reaching a great age where they are able to find ways to entertain themselves and remain safe while doing so. Now, I wouldn't be so entertained running in circles around a tree stump but it sure was a hit with these two (and a friend).
The boys really impressed us all weekend with how flexible, social and fun they were. They were great company!
One of my favorite parts of the weekend was seeing the boys hit it off with our friends the Mannion's little boy Alex. The boys are moving from parallel play to interactive play, and they just seemed so grown up as they played with a little friend, not caring a bit about what Mom and Dad were up to. It was the most independent I've seen them, and it was really cool. It helped that all the boys shared similar interests (along with most 2 year old boys) such as cars and running.
Ethan and Alex especially seemed to bond, as they laughed while making up nonsense words and exchanged sheepish grins when caught jumping on the bed.
This was quite a turning point for all of us, with the boys displaying a new kind of maturity and independence that allowed Noah and I to relax more while out with them and increased their enjoyment as well. They liked exploring new places, enjoyed getting to know people better, and ate as much meat as a grown man. Each. It is such fun to see them growing up!
One of the challenges of the weekend was keeping Lucas away from foods that had gluten, which includes crackers as well as any yummy baked good. We had to get creative with our excuses and be consistent by denying both boys treats. So they have learned some strange lessons, such as other people's crackers are too hard to bite and that big cookies are only for grown ups. To which Ethan wistfully responded, "Ethan will be a grown up...someday." Actually, we are pretty sure that it won't take that long for them to figure out that cupcakes with sprinkles aren't really the "spicy kind" that give you tummyaches.
I'll have to pack treats for the next BBQ.

That's the hardest part of allergies - having to deny them what every other child their age eats - and having to do it for both of them. I feel your pain! It will get easier as you find new and different types of treats that only 'they' can enjoy!
