G is for Googie

We have been having fun learning the alphabet recently. The boys have most of their letters down - they can recognize and generally pronounce them, thanks to our phonics bus and bath-time letters that float and stick to the wall of the tub. It is only fun for about 5 or 6 letters at a time before we start eating them or crashing the bus into our brother. It's pretty exciting, however, to see them starting to learn such a "big boy" skill. Fun with letters has led to some amusing stories lately.

Ethan discovered, on his own, that an "M" turned upside down is a "W". He loves to show this to us either by holding the letter and saying "M" and then turning it upside down to say "W" or by turning himself around while looking at an "M".

Ethan also "read" his first word the other night. We were reading GoodNight Moon and on the cover he saw the word "moon" and pointed each letter out. It went like this: "M...O...Other O...N" It was so cute to hear him say "Other O". Then he finished by running his finger across the word like I do when I am reading to him.

Lucas is super-cute when he points out the letter "X". He works so hard to pronounce it and it comes out "Ekkk". He also has developed an affinity for Cookie Monster and excitedly points him out on TV, toys, and in books. He calls him "Googie". Therefore, we have changed the lyrics to "C is for Cookie" to "G is for Googie" around our house.

It is amazing that the alphabet is just one more way we are constantly reminded that they are growing up so fast. They've gone from spitting up to saying their letters in so little time. I try each day to take some time to just watch them and appreciate what is wonderful about where they are at and who they are today. Someday Lucas will say "X" correctly and it will be impossible to believe it was ever an "Ekk." But I'll always know that I took the time to smile and enjoy it while it lasted.
