Recently the boys have taken a deeper interest in our dog Lucy. Ethan is especially affectionate, showering her with hugs, kisses and pets. Lucy isn’t quite sure what to think of this new development. Always anxious, she acts rather suspicious of his motives. She just sort of freezes when Ethan gives her a big hug, or just stares blankly when he throws one of her toys in an effort to play fetch. She’ll catch on eventually.
It has really warmed my heart to see this interaction. It is just another demonstration of how big Ethan’s heart is. He looks for her when we come home and doesn’t mind that she jumps on him and tries to stick her tongue up his nose. He also loves to have her cuddle up with him if we turn the TV on. A couple of nights ago, Ethan asked if Lucy could be his “cuddle friend” for the night. We usually let the boys pick a stuffed toy to snuggle with when they go to bed, and Ethan was very excited to have a living, breathing companion. Unfortunately, she wasn’t quite willing to stick around the whole time he was falling asleep, but she did find Lucas’ bed to be a cozy place later another night.
Ethan is most compassionate when he thinks that Lucy is scared. He’ll speak in a soft, high voice, telling her “It’s okay.” He gives her gentle, reassuring pets. He now asks if we can take her with us places. As much as she would probably enjoy My Gym, I assure Ethan that it is best for her to stay home.
Both boys love to feed her, but she doesn’t usually like to eat while they hover over her bowl, explaining “I got you food. Eat now. Come on, Lucy. Eat!”
As she turns five this month, It is really nice to see our first baby receiving love from our other two. What a big happy family we are.
