The Arts

The boys have recently discovered the joys of theater, music and dance. We took them to their first play a couple of weeks ago. We went to the San Diego Junior Theatre (where I used to work) and saw a production of "Blue's Clues." I was SO excited! Not that I'm a huge fan of Blue's Clues, but sharing a play with my kids has been a lifelong dream of mine, as it is a favorite memory of my childhood. But enough about me...

The lights dimmed and the boys' eyes widened. The first thing we saw was a puppet-like face on a huge red curtain. A hush fell over the crowd...except for Lucas who cried "WHOA!!" for the first time in his life, at full volume. This was followed by "THE RED THING IS TALKING!!" Cutest thing ever. The boys sat transfixed for the entire 45 minute show. Ethan especially enjoyed the musical numbers and even tried to mimic the characters' dance moves from his seat. Lucas was definitely trying to figure out what was going on, asking "WHERE IS THE DOG GOING?" or observing "THAT MAILBOX IS DANCING!" as the show progressed. I was thrilled with how interested they were, how totally adorable they were, and how well behaved they were. I can't wait for the next show!

In addition to their theatrical experience, we enrolled in a music class. The boys have really taken to it. The teacher provides a CD of all the music from the class so we can listen and learn at home. The boys love the music and are always asking to play the songs at home and in the car. They have learned to recognize the sounds of several different instruments, and love to grab an appropriate instument from our playroom to play along with some of their favorite songs. But nothing beats the dance performances. Currently in production is the "Can Can." The boys dress up in anything they can find and "dance" (run in circles, waving their arms, screaming and laughing). They often choose a partner for their dance, such as a stuffed toy, toy car, or in the photo below, a helicopter. It is a riot.
