“That’s a wiener!”
Thus began our 16 week ultrasound. The technician with a heavy Russian accent happily announced her find, explaining that this meant Baby B was a boy. Grateful for her guidance through this complex web of logic, we reflected on the fact that we are having a son; actually, two sons. Just minutes earlier she had pointed out what was a “likely wiener” on Baby A. Pleased that we were able to translate her technical jargon, we looked at each other and said “two boys!”
We immediately began to imagine how wonderful it will be for these boys to have each other as a brother and a best friend. Playing ball together, starting a band together, going out on double dates together. Then Baby B kicked Baby A in the head.
Suddenly they were Rich and Dan Toscano. Or any other brothers you know. Rich and Dan are somewhat famous for beating each other up, on American soil and overseas, but our boys have them beat…it’s Ultimate Uterine Fighting!
The difference between the ultrasounds at 12 and 16 weeks was unbelievable… last time, we could make out some basic features, but it still looked like a couple of blobs in there. This time, we could clearly see the brain, leg bones, feet, hands, eyes, and, of course, “wieners”. In fact, our technician could see the stomach and kidneys, which, to us, looked like a tiny black dot and two tiny white dots. And although she refers to male genitalia as a “wiener”, she did not, in fact, call the stomach a “foodhole”.
Baby A, already aspiring to be an actor, posed for his first headshot, with designs on being the lead in Alien 5 or Spider-Man 3.
Mommy A (Jessica) was happy to have had such an enlightening appointment…all this now recorded growth explains the twinges, pulls, and pains she has been experiencing lately. In fact, Baby A is on the bottom, and breech (feet down, diagonal), and Baby B is on top, transverse (sideways, across the abdomen), the two of them sort of making a “greater than” (>) symbol. This is appropriate since the discomfort thus far has been greater than Mommy ever expected! Not that she has a problem with her uterus being stretched in every direction like it’s made of Silly Putty, but her back, hips, and legs are loudly voicing their objection.
Noah has been doing some traveling for music, but makes sure to be home for all the appointments! But we’re getting closer to moving, so it’s time to start thinking about giant moving vans, packing, and where to move once in San Diego.
Lucy is pretty oblivious at this point. Whenever we think she might sense that something’s going on, she barks at a plastic bag, or perhaps a leaf, which reassures us that she’s not going through any complex thought processing. However, she is extremely cute, and until she realizes someone (or sometwo) are going to get a lot more attention than her, she is number one on our list! Now if we can just teach her how to pack boxes…
